Martin Maes and Mechanic Matteo have travelled North to Canada’s Rocky Mountains and the 10th Whistler Crankworx for Round 5 of the new Enduro World Series. The Enduro team are still missing Dan but they’re having a great time riding together as Matteo really gets to understand the details of Martin’s “insanely fast” style and his unique requirements for the Force.
Martin goes into Round 5 leading the junior event by a substantial margin.
Riders: Martin Maes
Mechanics: Matteo Nati
Bikes: The GT Force. Matteo reports that the bike’s set up is pretty similar on Colorado just a little adjustment on tyre pressure and suspension to optimise performance on the rough tracks.
Martin is feeling really confident on the Force with clip pedals.
A one day race consisting of 5 Stages on 5 different trails with limited practice. It will be gruelling with a total ride of 51km including19km of timed stages of which 10.63 km make up a brutal final stage. Add in 863 m of climbing and we’re set for an extremely testing race expected to take up to eight hours.
Stages quickly leave the bike-park to head off into the wilds around the resort. The riders will only pass through Whistler village once during the day (after stage 4). In a departure from the running of previous rounds, riders will not be able to return to the pits in between the first four stages, so they’ll need to be much more self-sufficient and on top of their equipment management. Stages one and five share the same start but head off in different directions whilst stages two to four circulate to the west of the resort, skirting Alta Lake.
The weather has been fine in the run up to the race with a few welcome showers in the evenings to help moderate the heat and dust. Temperatures and rainfall are expected to continue at a similar level.
History. It’s all new! Martin has never ridden at Whistler before.
Current situation – team perspectives
Matteo: “We’ve been riding a bit together in these days around the bike-park for fun…Martin’s insanely fast!!! He smashed a few big jumps on the Force and loved it….it was pretty cool for me ride with him and see his style over stuff, really useful…”
Martin: We are having such fun riding! We practised on the top of the World Stage 5 and it was great riding even though very hard work. I’m looking forward to the race.
