Gee and Rachel Atherton continue to be on unstoppable form as they took the double victory at The Crankworx Festival yesterday in the Polygon Air DH supported by Fox. It was their fourth consecutive double win of the season and a match for their performance here last year when they smashed the Inaugural Giant Air DH.
Rachel was first up. The course was in great condition; Tuesday’s thunderstorms had dried out leaving the track grippy and tremendous fun. Soon after the race Rachel said “That was hard work, it’s a long track and it’s scary in places but I loved it.”
None of the other girls could get close, Myriam Nicole was second, 9.86 seconds down on Rach and the New Zealander Coulomb Allan was in third – a massive 33.87 back.
Taylor Vernon was next up for the Juniors but took a massive fall and had to be helicoptered off the hill. Taylor has been taken to hospital at Grenoble where he’s in good spirits. We’ll keep you up to date with his condition.
The Men’s Elite race was delayed so by the time that Gee came to race the course was blown out. Neither this, nor the fact that he’d spent the previous couple of hours trackside with Taylor could stop Gee from powering to another great victory over 4 seconds clear of the field.
Gee said “I was stoked to take another win here alongside Rach but gutted that Tay got so beat up, thanks to everyone for the good wishes that have flooded in for the toughest kid we’ve ever met.”
Marc Beaumont narrowly missed podium in 6th place.
